Something old, something new.................

Something Old - This represents the link between the brides family and the past. Usually this is a piece of jewellery from either the brides mother or grandmother.

Something New - This represents the future - good fortune and success in the brides new life. Usually this is the wedding dress.

Something Borrowed - This represents the help and support that the bride has and will have when the wedding is over. this is usually a piece of jewellery or a lace .

Something Blue - This represents faithfulness and loyalty and goes back to biblical times when blue represented purity. This is usually a blue garter.

Other Traditions

A Sixpence placed in the brides shoe is to wish the bride wealth in both happiness and finances.

Confetti is thrown at the bride and groom to encourage fertility.

Throwing the bouquet, this was invented in America and the person to catch it is said to be the next married.

At the ceremony the bride should stand to the left of the groom, this is dated way back so that the groom has their sword arm free ready to fight off other men who may wish for his bride to be theirs.

The wedding veil should be worn to ward off evil spirits. Another reason that veils were worn was because grooms could not see their bride until they were wed in arranged marriages.

Traditionally couples should exchange vows as a clocks hands are "facing heaven".

The bride should be carried over the threshold to protect her from any evil spirits that may be present in the new home.
